From Most Reverend José H. Gomez
Archbishop of San Antonio
Matthew tells us that, in His final words to His apostles, Jesus commissioned them to make disciples of all nations, teaching them all He had taught them. In my first pastoral letter, "To Grow in Knowledge and Love of Jesus Christ", I wrote about the importance of knowing what Jesus proclaimed in the Gospels: "to grow in knowledge and love of Jesus is to grow in knowledge of his teaching and way of life."In this, the early part of the twenty-first century, the Church continues to carry out this great commission in many ways, including the use of modern technology. In a message marking the Feast of Saint Francis de Sales, patron saint of journalists, Pope John Paul II wrote "that the use of the techniques and the technologies of contemporary communications is an integral part of its (the Church's) mission in the third millennium."
I am pleased to write to you in support of the mission of La Promesa Foundation, to purchase and program Catholic radio stations as a means of evangelization and catechesis. Catholic radio has the potential for great impact on those who hear it, carrying the Gospel of Christ to people in a form that is both familiar and effective. Catholic radio can and does penetrate the clutter of daily life, bringing the life changing message of Jesus to people in their ears, in their homes as they go about the business of daily life, or wherever they may be.
It is my prayer that the people of the Archdiocese will some day share in the blessings of a Catholic radio station. Let us pray together for the intercession of Mary, our Blessed Mother, for your success, so that we will have a radio station that will proclaim "the greatness of the Lord."
May Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, grant you peace and joy.
